companies in order to assist the region in making the
transition from a federally dependent economy to
self-sufficiency through market forces.
Available locations fall
into two categories: existing buildings and facilities on
the Oak
Ridge Reservation, as
well as the

between Oak Ridge's residential area and Heritage Center.
Carefully developed along East Fork Poplar Creek, this park
features a careful preservation of the area's natural
resources integrated with modern telecommunications and

resources make this location prime for business on the
cutting edge of technology.
The Oak
Ridge Reservation
DOE is offering
unique opportunities to private businesses to locate at the
Reservation, at the 5,000-acre Heritage Center (the former
K-25 Site) and parts of the Y-12 Plant. Numerous facilities,
many containing reusable or salvageable equipment, are
available to meet countless industrial needs. Current
reindustrialization efforts range from recycling and reuse
of equipment and materials to leasing Heritage Center space
for manufacturing and technology research and
development.

East
Tennessee is a vital
"Technology Corridor" spanning the area from Chattanooga to
the Virginia border. A world-class array of capabilities and
highly trained personnel make the Oak Ridge Reservation the
scientific magnet for the Corridor and the southeastern
United States. Partnerships among government, universities,
and private industry create a strong organization in which
scientific research, technology application, and industrial
opportunity are supported to leverage resources and attract
wide participation.
Capabilities
of DOE's Oak Ridge facilities include manufacturing
expertise, environmental restoration, technology
development, waste management technology, project
management, and education.

Regional
Work Force
Potential employees
include highly trained professionals, technical staff, and
skilled and unskilled labor. Major industries in the region
manufacture aluminum, aircraft parts, agricultural products,
specialized chemicals, textiles, and automobile original
equipment. Knoxville is also a regional business and
financial center.
Transportation
The Reservation is
at the intersection of two of the nation's major interstate
routes (I-75, north-south and I-40, east-west). A network of
navigable waterways and commercial rail lines serves the
region. Twelve airlines with approximately 120 flights daily
serve Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Airport, which has a
duty-free foreign trade zone.
Utilities
Full
industrial-level utilities are available on and near the
Reservation to help maintain the existing complex and
support the conversion to private industry. The Tennessee
Valley Authority (TVA) provides electricity in quantities
and at rates that are among the most competitive and stable
in the country.
